CRAP! Learners Application 2023-2024

CRAP! Learners is a hybrid between a course (the content has already been designed) and a discussion group (participants actively engage to support everyone’s learning). We will take about half of each session to watch/listen to videos/podcasts by experts, professors, and scientists and about half of the time to discuss and reflect.

The goal will be to make sense of the complex society humans have created and hopefully better understand how economy, energy system, climate change, resource depletion, species extinction, and more are connected. We will take a whole systems approach, keeping the bigger picture in mind and studying how everything is connected in our global society today. Some moments will feel emotional, upsetting, and potentially enraging, and we will engage with this as a group. The level of learning may seem very academic at times, and we will try to make sense of it and unpack it in as simple a way as possible.

FORMAT:

We would like to create a cohesive, trusting, and supportive group, and we request that you attend all the sessions, if possible. We are planning to meet in Perth and have bi-weekly sessions of 1.5 hours each. The evening will be either Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday (we ask for your input below). We will start in late October and will run to the month of May, with a break during the winter holidays and in the month of February. The group may also decide to stay in touch through email or Whatsapp.

CONTENT:

The learning content will start with:

Other possible content may include (depending on questions/discussions that arise):

  • Kate Raworth’s Doughnut Economy
  • Stockholm Resilience Centre’s work on planetary boundaries
  • Max Wilbert and the Bright Green Lies book
  • How energy production and GDP are closely linked
  • How green technologies do not provide all the solutions to our ecological crises
  • Deep ecology and biophilia

If you are interested, please fill out the form below. Deadline to apply: October 15, 2023.

Thank you for your response. ✨

Which evening are you NOT available?
Would you prefer?

Do you think you can commit to attending most if not all sessions?(required)

There is a lot of divisiveness in our current culture. CRAP! Learners is a mutually-supportive learning group–not a debate group. Are you open to different perspectives and possibly changing your mind?(required)

If you happen to disagree on a topic, we would take that as an opportunity to learn more and may ask you to do some research and present your findings and sources at the next session. Would you be willing to do that?(required)
